North Highway 1 Adventure Route

Tech Stan's Kenda_-3

This ride was created and road-tested by our friend and colleague, James Stout! He wanted to experience the beauty of Highway 1 without being interrupted by road closures, and thus, the Highway 1 Adventure Route was born. He generously shared some details about his journey with Cycle Central Coast riders that want to clip in for this breathtaking trip.

“The Highway 1 Adventure Route is not for the faint of heart or the weak of leg, but for those who are prepared, it is one of the best days on the bike you’ll ever experience—plus it’s a great way to tackle Highway 1 on two wheels during the road closures. The route takes in much of what makes the Central Coast an amazing destination. You’ll see the beautiful pines of Cambria, the rolling hills of Paso Robles and the majestic Big Sur coastline.

Great lunch views in Big Sur.

We’d suggest that you pack your camping gear for this one—there are a few campsites along the route. After descending Nacimiento Ferguson Road (with caution), camp at Kit Creek to fully benefit from that Big Sur sunrise. Follow it up by spending a relatively short day riding around Big Sur. Before heading out, fuel up at Nepenthe and take in the breathtaking view of Packard Ranch and the coastline. You’ll certainly burn off that burger on the way out of Big Sur, so come prepared for the long climb back up Nacimiento Ferguson! It gets hot in the summer and we suggest carrying at least three bottles and filling up whenever you can. The second half of the ride is pretty sparse but we filled up in Lockwood, at the Mission San Antonio de Padua, which is well worth the time to stop and look around. Upon returning to Cambria, rest and relax at one of Cambria’s many picturesque lodging properties. You really can’t go wrong.”

Mission San Antonio de Padua

The mission, complete with an iconic bell and incredible architecture, is a wonderful reminder of California’s past. It’s a long way from the regular tourist trail, making it one of the rare and more rewarding mission experiences along California’s coastline.

Big Sur!

This town’s landscape is globally renowned as one of the most breathtaking coastlines in the world. There’s not much you can share with Paul McCartney, except for this: allegedly, his holiday home sits on the Highway 1, and the same view is yours for free!
