Two-Wheeled Tours: Stunning Vistas on Highway 1

Two-Wheeled Tours: Stunning Vistas on Highway 1

There are countless perks when cycling on the Central Coast—challenging routes, great local cycling events, and an abundance of choices for lodging, just to name a few. But for many, the ultimate bonus on a Central Coast ride is the view. Around every turn, there is a new panoramic picture right before your eyes. The beauty is so breathtaking that it could not be adequately captured by painter’s brush or camera. The exhilaration is amplified by the journey—miles and miles of pedaling makes those moments even more special. Take note of some of our favorite vantage points on our stretch of Highway 1 and remember to tag @CycleCentralCoast in your photos when you visit!

Salmon Creek Trailhead

At the beginning of Salmon Creek Trail, you can stop and see a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean in the distance.

Piedras Blancas Light Station

The lighthouse is a sight to behold, so it’s worth getting a little closer (and potentially even taking a tour, offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays year-round and every morning during the summer). The surrounding natural scenery is equally as impressive.

Elephant Seals

The Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery is a favorite stop for many Central Coast visitors. During peak seasons in February and October, thousands of seals swim to the land-based rookery to mate and molt. The rest of the year, elephant seals can be seen lounging about.

View of the Lighthouse & Hearst Castle

On a clear day, you can see two of the Central Coast’s most notable landmarks, the Piedras Blancas Light Station to the north and Hearst Castle to the south.

San Simeon Pier

The San Simeon Pier is a sight in itself, but from this area, you can also see Hearst Castle looming on the hills opposite the pier.

Beach Stop – Small Beach

This small, unassuming beach is the perfect stop on Highway 1 to pull off and rest for a moment as you listen to the soothing waves.

Pacific Ocean Overlook

Just down the road from San Simeon, there is a particularly magnificent view of this small portion of the Pacific Ocean.

Leffingwell Landing

Leffingwell Landing State Park in Cambria is a beautiful place to pause your ride and enjoy the scenery. Head down to Moonstone Beach to hunt for some moonstones or enjoy the view at the cliffs just off Highway 1.

View of Morro Rock

Morro Rock is a monolith to the south of this vista, where you can meander down some short trails for the ultimate outlook.

Beach Stop – Sand Dollars

Search for sand dollars on this beach in Cayucos, where they lie in abundance just waiting to be found.
