Salmon Creek Trail
Gorda Route
Tucked away on Highway 1 approximately 4 miles north of Ragged Point, Salmon Creek Trail meanders inland away from the coast, passing by grottos, waterfalls, and lush flora. This out-and-back trail is about 6.5 miles long, but you can turn back anytime. Remember to look back as you ascend for some glimpses of the Pacific Ocean through the hills!
Valencia Peak Trail
Montaña de Oro Route
Just south of Morro Bay is Montaña de Oro State Park, which features rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills, including 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. The Valencia Peak Trail is 4.5 miles round-trip, with plenty of switchbacks to ease the hike up steep terrain. The slight increase in elevation comes with incredible 360-degree views!
Bob Jones Trail
Avila Beach Route
About 5 miles long and just off Highway 1, the Bob Jones Trail runs through Avila Beach, connecting the coastal area to downtown. The paved trail designed for cycling follows a winding stream with trees and plants lining the sides. The Edna Valley Route, the Oso Flaco Lake Route, and the Cambria Route also incorporate Bob Jones Trail as part of the route.
Leffingwell Landing Trail
Highway 46 Route
Leffingwell Landing, part of Hearst San Simeon State Park, sits at the north end of Cambria’s Moonstone Beach, offering the perfect stop for a quick walk with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The trail extends along the ocean for about 2 miles, if you include the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk in your casual hike. There is also a public restroom here.
Partington Cove Trail
Highway 1 Adventure Route – Altitude
This quick, 1-mile hike will take you through a tunnel and to the creek, the beach, or an overlook, depending on which path you take. No matter what, you’re in for iconic Big Sur views and crisp ocean air. There is a public restroom here, as well.
San Carpoforo Creek Trail
Gorda Route
This short, flat trail just north of Ragged Point heads along the creek past an old, gnarled tree to the ocean. Lush grasslands yield to a sprawling beach where there is plenty of room for a picnic lunch. During the spring and early summer, there is an abundance of wildflowers to enjoy, as well.
